Acanthamoeba
Contact lens wearers who use AMO Complete Moisture Plus
Multi-Purpose Solution should throw the solution away,
federal health officials said. The Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention issued a warning about the product, which is
used to clean and store soft contact lenses, since it appears
to be linked to cases of an eye infection known as
Acanthamoeba keratitis. The CDC and the Food and Drug
Administration are looking into 138 confirmed cases of the
infection, which can cause permanent vision loss or
blindness, The Associated Press reports. The lens solution
manufacturer, Advanced Medical Optics Inc., issued an
immediate voluntary recall of the solution, although the
company added that there was no evidence of product
contamination. Researchers suspect that the infection does
not originate with the product or its manufacture, but that the
solution is failing to protect users from infection, the AP
says. The CDC says anyone who uses AMO Complete
Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution should discard the
product itself, as well as the contact lenses and storage
case it was used with.
