1-800-Contacts
1-800-Contacts made a slick last attempt to change the law
but the American Optometric Association (AOA) spotted their
move. As the lame duck Congress was voting on unrelated
matter in late-night sessions in December of 2006, a bill aimed
at allowing online sellers to overfill contact lens prescriptions
was attached to two unrelated bills. One bill was a bill
designed to promote research into methamphetamine abuse
(HR798) and the other bill was intended to promote better
health services to premature infants and their mothers
(HR707).
Thomas Crooks, Optometrist and President of the AOA
stated, "Patients are safer today because Congress heard the
concerns of Optometrists and made an informed decision."
In 2006 there were over 100 confirmed cases of Fusarium
keratitis where some of the patients lost an eye or suffered
permanent vision loss. In many cases, poor training of
proper contact use and maintenance was associated with the
Fusarium keratitis.
